Sonnet Mondal & Sangeeta Majumder Echoing Shadows

Echoing Shadows — as this rendition has been denominated, is a live poetry recital by Sonnet Mondal, enacted through steps of Kathak by Sangeeta Majumder.

Getting into the details, Echoing shadows is a verse-story by Sonnet Mondal presented — in the form of a Poet imagining himself to be a contemplative Indian village girl. The term Echoing Shadows has been used as a metaphor — to depict the effect of memories echoing in our minds through nostalgia, ecstasy and apprehension. The poem which is a mixture of abstractions and factual depictions, is divided into four phases — which include the girl’s early days in her village, her life in cities as she grows up to pursue her dreams, her life with religion, her life encircled by materialistic thoughts and at last her life of realisation.

The girl steps into life — breathing the mellow flavour of her village flora & fauna and then moves on to the city to pursue her dreams, much influenced by her friends who had already moved in hope to realise different whims of their life. City pleasures become bane of her life and she moves on to the world of religion. She finds the city life futile and incapable of taming her inner turmoils. She veers off her ongoing life and joins the queue of Shiva devotees at Kashi Vishwanath temple in Northern India. Here too — she feels dissatisfied, restive and moves to the Trimula hills of south India to try another phase of the same religion. Stories of the past, attached to these holy places instill further inquisitiveness within her and she prefers to move away from them.

The deluge of questions flooding her mind remains unanswered. She moves on to other parts of the country and takes resort in her imagination amidst a historical past fenced within forts and fortresses. She tries rapture and happiness, imagining herself to be a court dancer filled with pride and Mughal luster. She realises — that the truth of life lies — neither in a scheduled living nor in a charismatic one. The truth is — there is no truth behind all we perceive to be true. She prefers to be a nomad mystic at last — dancing to the tune of earth songs.

The different phases of life, consisting of a person’s weaknesses and strength, have been marked sensitively in the poem. Kathak is the sole element of visual poetry in Echoing Shadows. This stage act which highlights several phases of an Indian’s life consist of poignant dance movements by Sangeeta Majumder.
