It is 1948. Chilean senator and poet Pablo Neruda accuses the government of betraying the Communist Party and is consequently rid of his post by the president, who issues an arrest warrant. After several failed attempts to flee the country, Neruda is forced to go into hiding for over a year. Inspired by these dramatic events, he works on an epic collection of poems titled Canto General (General Song).

Word of the persecuted poet reaches Europe and several artists including Pablo Picasso demand his release. And yet, he sees his struggle as an opportunity to rediscover himself.
