Paterson, New Jersey, becomes a backdrop to a story about a poet and his poetry. The main protagonist, whose name is also Paterson, is a bus driver. Poetry is always on his mind, whether it be on his way to work, from work, or during driving. He jots everything down into a notebook with a secret, eponymous name. He writes poetry during his lunchbreak, sitting by the Great Falls of the Passaic River – his favorite spot. He writes poetry when he's at home; in fact, he writes poetry ceaselessly, at any place and any time.

Through this suggestive story of a poet, Jim Jarmusch is lyrically reacting to the subtle disappearance of poetry from our lives.
