Pospiš / Sillay / Nikitin (SK) – Singing to You / Ars Poetica 2018

Saturday, November 17 / Café Berlinka SNG / nám. Ľ. Štúra 4
21.00 / Concert

The trio Pospiš / Sillay / Nikitin met in The Samurai Hotel Recording Studio in New York to record an album that would pay homage to one of the greats of American poetry, Walt Whitman. Spev tebe (Singing to You) is a collaboration between the three Slovak musicians, the distinguished vocalist Hanka Gregušová (Hanka G) and prominent musical guests from overseas. It was Hanka G, Bratislava-born singer currently residing in the big apple, who helped arrange this collaboration with an elite trio of American musicians.

The names Stanley Banks (bass), John Peters (keys and organ) and Taru Alexander (drums) undoubtedly stand out in the American scene. Musicians who collaborated with artists of such caliber as Alicia Keys, Etta James, Aretha Franklin or George Benson, surely don't need much introduction. "Two years go I stumbled upon Walt Whitman's Song of Myself and I was struck by the musicality of his poetry. That was the very first impulse. I knew that I might have just discovered a path that leads to very powerful songs. It would have been a different record had we decided not to record it in New York. We wanted to capture the same air that Walt Whitman breathed," said Robert Pospiš, vocalist, lyricist and producer on the creation of this new release. He entrusted the Slovak poet and translator Martin Solotruk with the difficult task of translating Whitman's poetry, which resulted in a new translation of the constantly sought-after work by the famed American poet.
