The Association of Slovak Writers Awards for the year 2016, which took place on November 29, 2017 in the Zichy Palace in Bratislava, ended on a triple triumph for the members of the Club of Independent Writers. The Slovak PEN Centre Prize was awarded to Ireney Baláž for the poetry collection Čas hmatu. The Club of Independent Writers Award went to Mila Haugová for her poetry collection Doe Looking at the Polaris. The annual Association of Writer Organizations of Slovakia Award went to Milan Richter for the book Kafka and Kafka, which contains two plays, Z Kafkovho pekloraja and Kafkov druhý život.
The prize winners were handpicked by a jury consisting of Igor Hochel (jury president), Dagmar Inštitorisová and Anton Baláž. The jury assessed almost two dozen books published by members of the Club of Independent Writers in 2016, all written in a wide range of basic prosaic genres: children's literature, poetry, prose (short stories, novellas and novels), criticism and literary studies.
